You sit down to watch something together. “Let’s just put something on.” You scroll. They scroll. One platform, then another. Login. Password reset. Not available here, try somewhere else. The moment lingers. The energy is high. The content… is hardly there.

So what happens next? Do you keep trying? Switch platforms again? Go the easy route and just pirate the show? Or give up and just choose chill over Netflix (which, to be fair, isn’t exactly a bad outcome either)?

It looks like a small, everyday situation, but multiply it by thousands of people, every evening, across markets and the easy route of piracy starts to look more like a pattern. A pattern of highly accessible pirated content might make everyone think: is advertising unintentionally helping piracy grow?

With voices from media, telecoms and industry bodies, Matej Lončarić (Chair of the Working Group for Digital Subscription and Streaming, HUDI) with Ivan Benc (Director of TV Products and Content Department, MAXtv), Filip Jelavić mag. iur. (Secretary General, Hrvatska udruga priređivača igara na sreću/HUPIS) and Miruna Herovanu (Executive Director of the Audiovisual Anti-Piracy Alliance/AAPA), we’re putting piracy on the stand. HUDI’s panelist will explore hard-hitting questions like: can we win against piracy, do we need to, can we, as an industry, find a model that reduces damage without frustrating users – or could piracy ultimately be considered a good thing for the market?
